Nastia's Bars : What am I missing?

3 weeks ago Nastia looked like this in training:

And then placed 18th out of 19 on bars.

Now she looks like this:

If you're saying "she'll be ready", ask yourself why. Maybe you're psychic? Maybe you know more about gymnastics than I do. Or maybe you're trying to hold on to 2008. Personally, I don't see this happening. I hope she proves me wrong. But no one, not even little hand-broken Brenna Dowell is being spotted this much. This doesn't seem like and improvement on nationals to me. A dismount, yes, but she did the dismount in training last time around too. I don't feel like she's got the stamina to do it. What am I missing?

  1. I do agree that I would be shocked if Nastia performed an awesome bar routine this weekend. However, in her defense, her coach is always a spotter. I would guess that he gets nervous and likes to participate and be involved more than watch but he rarely stays out of the action in podium training. I am curious to see what she can put together on her own this weekend.

  2. I believe what you are missing is the love of nastia that makes everything she does seem beautiful and highly difficult and perfectly executed no matter how froggy her dismount is and how late her handstands are and how much help she's getting ;)

  3. I agree with you if she gets through the routine and proves me wrong then good but I just don't see anything to make me think she can do a full clean routine by herself with no spotting

  4. Who know's if she'll be "ready" or not. I just believe she can get through a bar routine without a spot. Obviously she can. She did it at Nationals. All i'm saying is that she can survive a bar routine without a spot. Valeri's choosing to spot her during training.

    1. She did not do it at Nationals. Neither day did she finish an elite bar routine.

    2. She did do it at nationals. She did a gienger, tkachev, and a pac salto. That's an elite bar routine. The only thing that was missing was a dismount.

    3. An elite bar routine includes a dismount. At the senior level, they are required to do a D or higher dismount. You can't say "the only thing missing": if something is missing, the product isn't complete!

Nastia has yet to complete a full routine without assistance in PT or competition. And if she doesn't have the stamina to do that now, I don't have faith she can later.

  5. I'm optimistic. I also don't think he's doing as much spotting as you think.

  6. You're not missing anything. Nastia looks about two weeks further along than she did at Nats. Good for her. Trouble is, she needed to be about two months further along by now. I think the most anyone can realistically expect at this point in competition - and it's a stretch - is a semi-decent interior of the routine followed by a dismount landed feet first. That, however, should by no means put her on the Olympic team.

  7. I do find all the commentary about his spotting unusual. Valeri always spots a lot on bars in training. I dont know how much of a difference his spotting is making - that remains to be seen. But the fact that he is spotting is not really that unusual.

    1. He doesn't spot like that for Bross.

    2. He doesn't spot anywhere as close for Grace either.

  8. At Visa a few weeks ago, most the time, he was was nowhere NEAR Bross. I wasn't even on the podium. He was leaned against the wall with his arms folded like a DICK!

  9. She looks worse to me. At Nationals she was doing things better in pieces. Now she is doing things messier with help from dad.

I hope she falls on her ass and leaves the spots to the gymnasts who earned them

  10. I think he's spotting so much because he knows she is having a hard time and doesnt want her to get hurt. I watched the trials last night and he was spotting Bross a lot too, and she fell 3 times. She is injured and not at her best. He is being a good father and good coach, being there for them if they have a bad fall. But I think he knew neither of them could make the Olympic team. Sad, because they are both so good!

  11. Tempermental is on drugs and seeing things that never happened. Don't try and sell us that bull shit. He was ignoring Becca during training and during trials. He did not even come up to her after her first fall.
