NCAA Loses the next Courtney Kupets

Annnnd, Aly Raisman is apparently going Pro. I'm upset. She could have been the next Courtney Kupets in my opinion, but instead she'll spend the post Olympic year doing "beam routines" to Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend.

(Property of Brigid Couch Gymnast McCarthy)

There are other rumors circulating the internet about all of the Worlds Team Members being "coerced" into going pro... great. Three more fabulous potential NCAA Athletes who will make all of $1000 on tours, GK Ads and some Kellogg's promotion.

As far a where I officially heard about Aly: I was sent a message by a person who has given me consistently reliable information over the years. She's asked me not to reveal who she is, so I won't. As I said on Twitter: the day I start announcing who talked is the day that people stop talking.

  1. Jeez I'd be surprised. She'd made some pretty pro Florida comments a little while ago. I think she'd wait and see if she made the Olympics first for sure

  2. I don't know that Raisman would have been the "next Courtney Kupets" with her form issues, especially on bars, but I think she would have done quite well in NCAA...hopefully the trade off is worth it

  3. Next time QUOTE YOUR SOURCES. Everyone knows this was on GGMB. "According to GGMB" Aly is going pro. Please stop pretending ideas are your own.

  4. smh at the whole thing. I can understand Jordyn going pro,she is the world AA champion, but i cant quite rap my mind around Aly and her not so pleasant gymnastics going pro.

Im glad Rhonda found a great recruit to give the scholarship that would have been Aly's to.

  5. @11:57 - I'm not a member of GGMB, from what I hear they don't like me too much over there anyway. I had a comment earlier on the "Happy Signing Day Thread", I tweeted about it and then I received a message from a person who sends me (correct) info from time to time. From what she told me, she didn't hear it from GGMB either.

  6. I would like to say that I trust that Bekah knows what she is talking about and has the information from a source that is reliable. We will have to wait and see for an official announcement in any case. Stop bashing Bekah!

  7. I love Aly, but I don't think going pro would make much sense for her, so I hope this rumor isn't true. Let's say she makes the Olympic team next year...what are the odds that she'll make AA finals again, especially with a healthy Weiber, Bross & Ross in the mix? Not high if you ask me, but I guess anything's possible, especially if someone chokes or (heaven forbid) is injured. Just seems insane to bank on it this early on.

  8. you make it seem like such a negative thing that she is going pro. NCAA isnt for everyone and just because she wont rack in the big bucks, if she can make a little money off of her talent, why not?

  9. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy for her opportunities, I just seriously hope that she doesn't live to regret it Jana Bieger style... it's not like she wasn't interested in NCAA, because she verballed to Florida. I totally wish her the best!

  10. I think the rumor is true. Bridget Sloan and Bridgey C. have all been gun-ho "gator chomp rah rah rah" for a while now. Even though Aly verbally committed she didn't show the same enthusiasm. Maybe this was something she and her parents were thinking of for awhile. And with the 2011 FX bronze and TF gold thought she had a better chance now to earn $.

  11. I kinda understand Aly going pro but other than McKayla, I don't think the other girls on the World team should. Sabrina's dance skills would be nice on an NCAA floor and I'm not sure what Gabby has planned for the future but I'm not sure if she'll make the team. If these girls value college at all, they shouldn't go pro.

The only good thing that ever came of an athlete going pro is Nastia's commercial with Nadia - impossible is nothing. She was really young though, so I'm not entirely sure if she was actually pro yet or what. Other then that, I guess my only hope is that they do better gym/skating spectaculars. Those usually just make me uncomfortable, like that video just did...

  12. ^ 9:48 PM. Aly doesn't seem to show much enthusiasm or personality when performing (i.e., FX), so if she's actually going pro and hoping to make $$ from gymnastics, she needs to work on showing some emotion starting yesterday. BTW, the only way Raisman could ever be compared to Kupets is if she also tears her Achilles.

  13. I think this could be a big mistake for Aly- making money off of gymnastics is contingent on 2 things: being a big star who the public recognizes (i.e. going to the Olympics and at least winning a medal if not a gold medal) and having a marketable personality. There is a reason that Shawn has had more opportunities than Carly and even Nastia even though they both won the Olympic AA. Shawn has an extremely marketable personality- hell she was voted the most well-liked sportsperson in America. Aly has both of these things going against her. She is by no means a shoe-in for the Olympic team and even if she goes it is unlikely she'll win an individual medal let alone a gold. Plus she is withdrawn etc., IMO she just isn't the superstar that Nastia, Shawn and even Jordyn is. From what I can tell there are only a very few American gymnasts who have truly cashed in after turning pro. Anyway, I'm disappointed cause I would have loved to have seen Aly in the NCAA. I'm afraid these girls got some big heads after winning the Team Gold and are getting some troublesome advice.

  14. @Ashley If these girls value college at all, they shouldn't go pro.

What if they don't want to go to college to do gymnastics, but to study? A sports scholarship doesn't have to be their only chance for college. Most of the girls have good grades and are intelligent, they can do so much more than only gymnastics! I think college gymnastics can be boring for an elite athlete. Now is the time for Aly to explore the opportunities to develop as an athlete (and maybe collect some more medals at Worlds in, say, 2013). Then she can go to college and actually learn something besides gymnastics, something new.

  15. Kupets form sucked. Open your eyes. She had more leg separations than Nastia did.
